Expansion valve — removal and installation

Warning: The air conditioning system is under high pressure. Do not loosen any fittings or remove any components until after the system has been discharged. Air conditioning refrigerant should be properly discharged into an EPA-approved container at a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning repair facility. Always wear eye protection when disconnecting air conditioning system fittings.

1. Have the refrigerant discharged at a dealer service department or an automotive air conditioning repair facility.

2. Move aside the lower dash insulation to access the expansion valve pipe.

3. Remove the cowl extension cover (see Body).

4. Remove the refrigerant line-to-expansion valve bolts and disconnect the refrigerant lines (see illustration 10.6).

5. Remove the expansion valve mounting bolts and remove the expansion valve.

6. Installation is the reverse of removal. Tighten the expansion valve bolts to the torque listed in this Chapter’s Specifications. Note: Do not use old 0-rings for the refrigerant lines; replace them with new ones and apply compressor oil to them before installation.

7. Have the system evacuated, charged and leak tested by the shop that discharged it.
